DMV seeks ways to use technology to help the public safely navigate through the current public health emergency. One of our challenges is ensuring your hearing will be conducted in an environment that supports social distancing for you, the hearing examiner, police officer, attorneys – all participants.
All police officers will appear remotely from their police district. Drivers may also skip the trip and appear remotely from their home or office via computer or mobile device.

To Schedule a Hearing for Minor Moving Violations
When requesting a hearing date online, you will be able to select a date and time that is convenient for you. When selecting your hearing, you will have the option to choose to appear in person or remotely for a virtual hearing. Visit the contesting a moving violation webpage for more information. Technical requirements for virtual hearings
- Must have fast and stable internet connection.
- Must have a video device, such as a webcam on a computer, a phone, or a laptop.
- Must have a microphone, or the ability to dial into a number via a phone.
- Must have a valid, working email address.
- Must allow application/plugin installation for Cisco Webex Meetings.
Requesting Sign Language Translation
Requests for an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter require two weeks notice. For scheduled hearings, including walk-in and virtual hearings on a minor moving, parking and photo enforcement violations, please submit ASL interpreter requests in-person or via email at [email protected]. For email submissions, enter “ASL Interpreter Request” in the subject line. The hearing request should include your name, hearing date and ticket number. If the hearing is related to the reinstatement of a driver license or privilege to operate a vehicle in DC, include your driver license number. Adjudication Services will arrange for an interpreter and confirm scheduling via email.
The Day of Your Virtual Hearing
Minor Moving Violations Virtual Hearing Calendar
The morning of your hearing, the hearing calendar will be posted. Search for the initial of your first name and the first three letters of your last name then click on your assigned hearing room link. For example, John Smith would be posted, J. SMI. You will be placed in our virtual waiting room until the hearing examiner starts the hearing session.

Parking/Photo Enforcement Violations Virtual Hearing Calendar
The morning of your hearing, the hearing calendar will be posted. Search for the date of your scheduled hearing then click on your assigned hearing time. You will be placed in our virtual waiting room until the hearing examiner starts the hearing session. If you fail to appear for your scheduled hearing a decision will be rendered in your absence based on the government’s evidence and any evidence you submitted. A hearing record will be mailed to your address of record.

To ensure the best experience and avoid delays
- Participate from a location with good overhead lighting and where you can eliminate noise from other sources.
- Test your camera and microphone before you connect to the hearing.
- Avoid setting up your device in front of a window, as you will appear in shadow.
- Minimize interruptions by others in your environment.
Hearing dress and decorum
Virtual hearings are an official court appearance and all persons participating in one must dress and conduct themselves as if they are physically going into a courtroom. Business casual clothing is acceptable. Persons not dressed appropriately and/or who conduct themselves in an unacceptable manner will be asked to leave the hearing or be expelled. All virtual hearing activity is subject to recording and broadcasting.
- Follow the hearing examiners instructions about when to speak to ensure all parties are heard.
- Be courteous and respectful to all participants.
- No profanity.
Failure to Appear
You may login 15 minutes before your hearing, but no later than 10 minutes after your scheduled appointment time. If you login more than 10 minutes after your appointment time, you will not be able to participate in the hearing.
If your hearing is a minor moving violation, you must file a Motion to Vacate Default Judgement (MTVDF) to seek approval to reschedule. View here for the Explanation of Motion Process and MTVDF Form.
If your hearing is a parking or photo enforcement hearing and you do not appear for your virtual hearing, the hearing examiner will enter a decision based on the government’s evidence and any evidence you submitted. If the ticket is upheld by the hearing examiner, you may file a request for reconsideration up to 30 days from the date of your hearing record upholding the ticket.
If your hearing is a suspension, revocation or reinstatement hearing, you are not eligible to file a Motion to Vacate Default. For more information, visit the License Reinstatement Information webpage.
At the conclusion of your hearing, the examiner will announce his or her decision, and the formal hearing record will be mailed to your address of record with DMV.
